Potassium Formate

Potassium formate is an organic salt, a flaky white solid, highly hygroscopic, possessing reducing properties, reacting with strong oxidizing agents, and readily soluble in water. In water, it rapidly dissociates into formate ions and potassium ions, releasing a large number of hydrogen ions. It is non-toxic and non-corrosive. Its aqueous solution is a colorless, transparent liquid with a specific gravity of 1.58 g/cm³. Liquid potassium formate typically has a purity of around 75%. Solid potassium formate generally has a purity of 97% or higher and can be prepared by mixing the solid with water to achieve a purity ratio of 50% or 60% as required.

Potassium Formate

Molecular Formula: HCOOK

CAS: 590-29-4

Uses:

1. Potassium formate is commonly used as an important component of drilling fluids. Its high density and low viscosity effectively carry drill cuttings, stabilize the wellbore,

prevent clay swelling and dispersion in the formation, and have minimal environmental impact, making it widely used in the oilfield industry.

2. In the de-icing agent industry, potassium formate is highly regarded for its excellent de-icing properties while overcoming all the drawbacks of acetates.

3. In the leather industry, potassium formate acts as a tanning aid during leather tanning, helping the leather better absorb tanning agents, improving leather quality and

durability, making it softer, fuller, and more waterproof.

4. In the textile printing and dyeing industry, it reacts with different types of dyes and is a strong reducing agent.
